President Obama versus former Vice President Dick Cheney is starting to rival The Thrilla in Manilla. Each man gave speeches today detailing what he views as the future of our national security. One man's elocution stings like a bee and the other man's podium pronouncements recall the heavy hands of Smokin' Joe Frazier.
Each man represents a far-reaching difference of opinion that spans more than who should have won American Idol last night. As I am not privy to their inner thoughts on American Idol, I have to guess Dick would have voted for Kris Allen and the President would have voted for Adam Lambert, but we were all made aware of their thoughts on our nation's security by their respective speeches.
Didn't Dick Cheney have eight years to make his case to the American people and why is it that Cheney feels the need to wage a permanent campaign against the current administration? Is Cheney truly worried about the nation's security or is he trying to re-frame the legacy of the Bush-Cheney administration?
When Dick Cheney was in office, he was reticent to speak with the press or make public pronouncements, but now he can't get enough face time. When Cheney was Vice President, he refused to divulge the inner workings of his Energy Task Force, but now he demands full disclosure and transparency from the Obama administration. If Bush and Cheney's policies had been attacked with the same ferocity, Cheney would have blasted the critic as being un-American.
According to Dick Cheney, the American people should know that only Dick Cheney can keep them safe, which is insulting to the men and women of our armed forces who protect this nation. Did the members of our armed forces become less vigilant when Barack Obama became President of the United States? Dick Cheney is campaigning to discredit the policies of the Obmama administration - where was Dick Cheney during the presidential campaign of 2008? Where was Dick Cheney in the fall of 2008 when our nation's economy fell into recession, which is equally important to our nation's security and stability.
Is Dick Cheney off his rocker when he states that America is not safe from another terrorist attack? No, he is 100% correct about that, but was the United States completely safe from a terrorist attack on its home soil during the Bush administration? Hey Dick, the terrorists have done a pretty good job of attacking our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, which no one wants to qualify as terrorist attacks. The men and women of our armed forces, who have lost their lives defending this nation in Iraq and Afghanistan, are as much victims of the War on Terror as are the men and women who perished on 9/11.
